Keep fit classes, going to the gym, jogging, etc. although not for everyone, are an extremely popular and good way of contributing towards staying healthy. There are many existing groups that run activities from different facilities (e.g. leisure centres, village halls, recreation fields, woods, etc).

jive Here is a taster of the different types of active exercise you can do.

Gym
Gyms can offer an all year round fitness workout that you can complete in a monitored ‘safe’ environment. It is important to find a gym that meets your specific needs and fits your personality and lifestyle. The type of facility you select can have an enormous impact on how often you go and what types of activity you are involved in.

There are many fitness instructors who run classes on different activities from Tai Chi to body pump. It is important to find out if an instructor has the correct qualifications to deliver the physical activity you are interested in. For example, The British Wheel of Yoga (BWY) has a database of registered instructors who have undertaken teacher training, are fully insured and regularly update their skills. They will also give details of other organisations that are accredited to the BWY.

The classes work your heart and lungs by varying the speed and difficulty of the ‘visual cycle route’ from pedalling up hill to going as fast as you can on the flat. This is a great workout for those who do not feel they have enough co-ordination needed in some fitness classes.
