Active travel is about choosing regular physical activity in the form of walking, cycling or even roller skating for your everyday trips as well as enjoying it as an active pastime. It’s a great way to fit regular physical activity into your daily active lifestyle. |

Here is a taster of the different types of active ways to travel you can do.
Walking
Walking is one of the best and most accessible forms of exercise and it is free! It requires no equipment or expense and can be built into your everyday routine. It's a good way to shed pounds and tone up muscles. You can burn approximately the same amount of calories a mile walking briskly as jogging. Walking also helps prevent bone loss that can lead to osteoporosis.

Cycling
Cycling is a convenient aerobic exercise that burns calories with less stress on the joints than walking. Biking about 3 miles on flat terrain with no wind expends the same number of calories as walking 1 mile. This is increased dramatically if you are going off road and on steep terrain.
Devon has a wide selection of cycle routes and cycle facilities, both on and off road. For further information on groups in your area click here to go to the 5X30 ‘Where to find physical activities’ or go to www.britishcycling.org.uk
Roller Skating
Roller skating is a fantastic activity that can create laughter. It is a good way to stay in shape all year round. It can strengthen legs and enhance cardiovascular endurance. A 6 mile skate is the aerobic equivalent of about a 3 mile run and avoids the strain on your knees.

Hiking
Hiking is not only a great form of physical exercise, but also a wonderful way to relax and in Devon a good way of getting to see different places. Adding interest to your routine, hiking can give you the benefits of cross training but without going to the gym. If you take different routes, hiking will challenge your muscles to perform regularly in different ways.

Horse Riding
Over 2 million people in Britain ride regularly, and many more ride occasionally as a weekend or holiday activity. Horse riding is not just a pastime for the fit, but it can also make you fit. It can be challenging activity that can improve co-ordination, balance and confidence. It is an activity that is also available to a wide range of people, regardless of age, gender or physical ability.
