Tips & techniques: Preparing for physical activity |
FIND AN ACTIVITY THAT YOU ENJOY
Finding an activity that suits both your temperament and your lifestyle is the key to long term exercise (see Types of activity for ideas). For example, if you are a social exerciser you could join an activity class or going for a walk with a friend. This will have the added bonus that you will not want to let down the people you normally exercise with.

Forcing yourself to do something just because it will give you an amazing figure is never going to work if that's all you get from it. So, take a look at what you want and find exercises that suit you. If you find you are not enjoying an activity, don’t continue until you are feeling guilty about missing sessions, there are so many, just find another one!
This has the added advantage that it challenges your body from the activities/routines it is used to. |

DEVELOP A SUPPORT NETWORK
Not yet convinced that you can become more physically active? That's where the people you know can help you out. Discuss your concerns with peers, family, friends, or co-workers who are physically active. Find out how they got started and what keeps them motivated. They might have some great "tips for success" about how to incorporate moderate-intensity physical activity into your daily routine. Turn to them for ideas, motivation, and support. Work together to get started and keep you going. Name two people with whom you will talk to and seek support. Set dates within the month for your discussion with them.

WEAR SUITABLE CLOTHING
Choose your clothing to suit the activity you are going to do. If you have decided to go on a walk, there is more danger to you if you are wearing stiletto shoes!
