Project background

The main aim of the 5X30 Project is to increase people’s moderate levels of physical activity within the area by 1% year on year, leading to a total 3% increase in the population being physically active by the end of the 3 year project period.

Where did the idea come from?
The World Health Organisation has developed (under a May 2002 mandate from Member States), a Global Strategy on Diet, Physical Activity and Health, which was endorsed by the May 2004 World Health Assembly.

In line with this, the Government produced a strategy (Game Plan, 2002) for delivering sport and physical activity.

Where did the money come from?
Mid Devon Primary Care Trust, Mid Devon District Council and West Devon Borough Council put in a funding bid to Active England (Big Lottery and Sport England Funding Programme). The funding bid was successful and the 3 year 5X30 Project was born. See financial support page for a full list of 5X30 funding contributors

Initially the area covered 91 parishes across Mid and West Devon, stretching between Hatherleigh, Okehampton, Cullompton and Morebath.

However the 5X30 Project did not cover the whole of West Devon and missed out another 27 parishes.

Further funding bids have been successful through the Community Investment Fund (Sport England) and South Hams & West Devon Primary Care Trust. This means the 5X30 Project has now grown!

For information on other funding organisations see the partners page.
