What is the 5X30 Project?

The main aim of the 5X30 Project is to increase people’s moderate levels of physical activity within the area by 1% year on year, leading to a total 3% increase in the population being physically active by the end of the 3 year project period.

Within this overall aim, the 5X30 Project
is going to:
To bring together at least 50 wide ranging sporting and non-sporting organisations/agencies to establish and develop a 5X30 Network

Hold a number of 5X30 Network days a year to get people and organisations who are involved in physical activity to encourage others through providing betterfacilities or improving existing ones

Create new physical activity opportunities for local people.

Provide support funds to assist in the initial start up costs of physical activity, training and access to facilities and transport.

Create and hold tailor made Healthy Lifestyle and Awareness training courses promoting the benefits of physical activity and links to healthy living.

Raise awareness of the benefits of physical activity throughout the 5X30 Project area

Develop Lifestyle Tutor training courses and train new people to become able to deliver physical activities in their own community.

Create opportunities for existing community buildings to be utilised more frequently and hold more than one physical activity.

Create a database of activities (through the website) so that people can get an idea of what is happening in their area.
Why do we need the 5X30 Project?
Many people in Mid and West Devon suffer from rural isolation with the area characterised by high access deprivation, low wages, high house prices and continued dependency on agriculture.

Decline in rural services e.g. village halls, post offices and other facilities, means people do not have as many opportunities to access physical activities

Health issues - 70% of adults are not active enough to benefit their health. Inactivity causes heart disease, diabetes, stress and obesity. General lack of understanding of what physical activity is. It isn’t just sport!

Inactivity causes heart disease, diabetes, stress and obesity.
The 5X30 is a local project which covers 118 parishes across Mid and West Devon, stretching from: Hatherleigh in the west, Tavistock in the south, Morebath to the north to Cullompton in the east.
